Coding AI Assistants Considered Detrimental

Reading the news, there are several occassions now that one can read that "AI Assistants" will make the art of programming a skill not worth acquiring. I also heard people actually telling that programming will become "unimportant" soon and that programmers will not be needed anymore. I wholeheartedly disagree with this assertion and just want to document why I arrive at this conclusion.

Watching from a close distance at what the Large Language Models are capable of doing in either natural language, image generation, music generation or even video generation, I of course noticed that the new tools were also being applied to the Art of Programming.

The Gold Digger Mood

As it became apparent that Chat-GPT and other LLMs were very good at answering in a natural language, people also quickly tried to use the new tools for "talking in code" and there were no real boundaries. I can still remember marveling about the systemd maintainer complaining that he got feature requests because of AI hallucinations.

People asked Chat-GPT for help on solving systemd related configurations. Chat-GPT hallucinated on several occasions and suggested using features of systemd that did not exist in reality. When people noticed that systemd does not even have the options that Chat-GPT suggested them to use, they did not experience any embarrassment but, on the opposite, raised GitHub issues with requests for those features. If Chat-GPT told them systemd had such an option <x> then the systemd maintainers should see to implement option <x> to make this claim true. I wondered at how
